Matariki

This week we are learning about Matariki.

What I know about Matariki.

Matariki is on the 13 to the 16 of July.

It also celebrates the maori new year. Matariki also celebrates the harvested food and the maori have a big feast. So there are multiple reasons to celebrate matariki.

The Matariki star cluster has about 500 stars but without a telescope you can only see 9 of them. There used to only be 7 stars but they recently discovered a new star.

There is a story about Matariki. Mummy fish said to the little fish “don’t swim out in the open because today is the day Tataraimaka goes fishing”. The little fish soon became bored and started chasing each other out in the open moana. They saw Tataraimaka’s shadow and tried to swim away but they already looked into the flax net of Tata raimaka.
