Pihitia Station Visit

Just 2 days ago we went down to Pihitia Station. Tristin's dad works at Pihitia Station. It was a whole school trip, but because of corona virus the moana syndicite went down there first. We took the bus and it took about half an hour to arive. When we did finaly arive the people (including Tristin's dad) where wating there. While we where wating we saw Evan (he is a butcher) get a sheep out of the freezer. The sheep was already dead and Toby (Tristin's dad) said he killed the sheep a week ago.

Altogether there were 7 station's to see. First our class got halved into two groups. The first stop for my group was the weighing and the farm dog's. First we had to get the sheeps into the passege way wich was quite easy. Then the sheep would get shoved into the cage and if they were heavy enough they would keep going and if they were not heavy enough they would go into a diffrent padock.

The last stop that we went to was the milking. We didn't go into the milking shed and I don't even know if there is one. At the milking stop each group got a glass with cream in it. We had to shake the glass and then it would become cream. After that it would become butter. The person there said that only one group before has maneged to make butter.

Pie and Doughnut Day!

Pie and doughnut are delicious so it was no surprise that I was super excited but

that’s not all today we were allowed to wear pyjamas! Because it was pyjama day

everyone who wore a pyjama had to bring a gold coin donation. Angus counted

the donations and all together we had $310.

The gold coin donations were for year six camp which got delayed because of

coronavirus. If coronavirus wasn’t there I wouldn’t get to go on camp because I

was sick in the week when camp should have been.

Maths Whizz!

In my syndicate the teachers introduced a new maths program . The maths program is called (you Might know it from the title) Maths Whizz! When you start with the program you automatically have to do an assesment test. Then Whizzy the robot puts you in the level that you are. If you complete two activitys then you get a jem (YAY). Each week you have to do 119 minutes.

Once you have done the 102 minutes then you can only do topic challenges. Topic challenges means, when some body completes a task in record time, then the person can challenge you to beat their time. I myself have been invited to 3 challenges and won two of them. Here is a photo of Maths Whizz:

On this photo you can see that I have already done my 102 minutes on Maths Whizz so I can only do topic challenges. I like the new program and have fun doing it.

Matariki

This week we are learning about Matariki.

What I know about Matariki.

Matariki is on the 13 to the 16 of July.

It also celebrates the maori new year. Matariki also celebrates the harvested food and the maori have a big feast. So there are multiple reasons to celebrate matariki.

The Matariki star cluster has about 500 stars but without a telescope you can only see 9 of them. There used to only be 7 stars but they recently discovered a new star.

There is a story about Matariki. Mummy fish said to the little fish “don’t swim out in the open because today is the day Tataraimaka goes fishing”. The little fish soon became bored and started chasing each other out in the open moana. They saw Tataraimaka’s shadow and tried to swim away but they already looked into the flax net of Tata raimaka.

Steps And E-ako

In class we have to do steps and e-ako. E-ako is to improve our math skills. Steps is there to improve our word and punctuation skills. We have to try to do both each day.

On e-ako there are 9 different categories. Each level has some flags on it. The teacher says that we are only allowed to do the categories with the flags on them which for every person, the flags are in a different category.

On Steps there are so many levels I don’t know how many. On Steps I am on level 5. Everybody has to do Steps in a time that suits them. Right now we are all doing Steps at the same time. On Steps the teachers can see how long and what we have been doing.

Bubble Day

When I was about four years old we had a thing that could make giant bubbles. The bubbles could be up to 2 metres high and wide. In my class this and last Wednesday, koka Holly and koka Jo were in class. They told us that we would have a day that in our buzz groups, we would have  to make our own bubbles.

My buzz group chose to make unbreakable bubbles. Me and my buzz group then found two recipes from the internet. We chose the first one because the second recipe had glycerin and we didn’t know where to get glycerin from.

In the other recipe we needed white corn syrup which countdown and pak n save didn’t have. Because the shops didn’t have it we googled corn syrup substitute. It came up with that brown rice malt syrup worked just as well.

Just Dance

In this term we did Just dance. Just dance is a game that you can play on your computer. To play it you have to have a phone or a wii. You can just download it on your computer and your phone. On a Wii you have to buy the game from a store or the internet.

In MLH we don’t have a Wii and not everyone has their own phone.
We just do it on youtube and copy the moves of the projector. At home me and my family downloaded Just dance on our big screen.

At school I normally do Just dance songs with 4 people, 3 people, 2 people and songs with 1 person. I am normally in a group with Robbie, Angus and Mako. Even though we don’t have the controllers it is still very fun. My favorite dance is probably Waka Waka because you have to form a human bike.

Learning From Home

Back at school

I was really happy to be back at school because I finally got to see my friends again.

School started back in week 6. If you are confused, in the first 2 weeks of term 2 we didn’t do any school.

Back at school we had a theme week. Every week in lock down we had a theme week. We also had Google meetings and on Fridays we all had to dress up. In one week we had to pick a famous person and I chose Beethoven. The teachers said their favorite dress up was my Beethoven.

Lockdown started on 25 March and ended on 27 of April. Now we are in week 8 and have 4 weeks left at school. After 4 weeks of online learning we finally got back to school. At first when we went into lockdown I was kind of scared because I wouldn’t see my friends in a long time.

In conclusion I think lockdown learning was one of my best experiences ever!

Swimming Sports

Hi this week we there was swimming sports. I signed up for 2 strokes. I competed in freesyle and breaststroke. My friend competed in all 3 events. I liked breastsroke the most. I liked breaststroke the most is because breaststroke was the first stroke that I ever learnt. When the buzzer went my goggles went down so that water came in my goggles. I had to stop twice on the lane to put them into the right place.

I didn't want to do freestyle at the start but then the teachers said the you have to do 2 swimming styles. There was a lot of waiting but when it was finally my turn. I felt really nervous. When I stepped on the starting block, I was scared to miss the start. I was facing Bay, Oliver and some other people that I can't remember.

The Magnificent Kauri

Hi welcome back to my blog.
Today I would like to introduce you to a real giant, "Tane Mahuta", (Maori for „lord of the forest“).
You can see him in the photo. He is 2350 years old.
He is 4.91 metres in diameter and 17.8 metres to the first branch.

The Kauri Tree is a type of pine which grows in the northern part of the North Island.
Ancestors of the Kauri first appeared between 135 - 190 million years ago. Can you believe how old that is?
The oldest tree is Te Matua Ngahere. He is about 3000 years old.

As a young tree the kauri has a narrow shape with branches along the length of the trunk. As it grows the lower branches fall off. Eventually the top branches develop into a big crown. When the bottom branches fall off they don’t regenerate like other trees would do. Sometimes the crown of the trees gets knocked off in heavy storms and like the lower branches the crown dosen’t regenerate. The bark is sheding permanently so that vines can’t grow on it.
Wood from kauri is one of the world’s great timbers. Long wide planks were cut from the big trunks. The timber was used for many things like: ship building, houses, furniture, bridges, fences, dams, barrels, large rollers, rail sleepers, mine-props, carving etc. It is easy to work, easy to dry and very stable. Giant Kauri Ghost is the biggest kauri tree on record.  It lived up to the 1870’s.

The black rings that I am standing in front of symbolize the diameters of some of the largest ever recorded kauri trees in New Zealand.

Save our Kauri forests. They are dying from kauri dieback disease.
